4.  Keep on top of tax

Step 4 in our checklist on getting your money matters in shape.

Check your tax code. This usually consists of one letter and a few numbers, all of which mean something different. Make sure yours is correct by logging on to http://www.hmrc.gov.uk and clicking on ‘Income Tax’ and then ‘Tax codes’.

Check you’re not missing out on any tax credits or eligible benefits by logging on to  http:///www.entitledto.co.uk. And make sure you’re in the correct Council Tax band – visit  http://www.voa.gov.uk/council_tax
